SEATTLE – The UMKC softball team fell to the Seattle U Redhawks, 7-3, and was eliminated from the Western Athletic Conference tournament, after falling to CSU Bakersfield earlier in the day on Thursday, May 12 in Seattle, Washington.
The Redhawks (18-32) jumped on top early, scoring four runs in the first three innings off sophomore pitcher Amber Grove (14-11), after capitalizing on UMKC (24-26) errors in innings one and two.
The 'Roos tried to climb their way out of the four-run hole, and got close with a three-run fifth inning to bring the score within one. Freshman shortstop Morgan Byrn (0-for-1) led off the inning with one of her two walks of the game, and senior catcher Alexandra Friloux (1-for-3) moved her to second with a hard-hit infield single. Senior left fielder Brooke Parker (2-for-4) kept the rally going with a bunt single to load the bases.
With 'Roos at every base, sophomore Ashlin O'Brien (2-for-4) drove in two runs with a single up the middle to put runners at the corners, and after a fly-out from senior Katie Kelley (0-for-3), freshman Bri Sims drove in UMKC's third run of the inning on a fielder's choice, making the score 4-3.
Kelley, who came on in relief in the third inning, sat down the Redhawks in order in the sixth, but a 1-2-3 inning for the UMKC bats put her back out in the circle in a hurry. Seattle U, playing in front of a home crowd of 436 fans, rallied to score three runs off Kelley in the top of the seventh, and that would be more than the 'Roos could handle as they fell by a final score of 7-3.
