ST. LOUIS – The UMKC softball team picked up a big win on Saturday, March 5, against Saint Louis University, 4-3, in the Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri.
The win was aided by a complete-game in the circle from sophomore Amber Grove with a season-high eight strikeouts, and a late-inning home run off the bat of junior Alex Gale, her first-career bomb.
Saint Louis, (5-7), playing as the away team on their home field, were able to get on the board first, tallying two hits in the opening frame off Grove (3-3), to make the score 1-0.
The 'Roos (4-9) got back even with the Billikens in the bottom half of the first, after senior Katie Kelley (0-for-3) reached base for the eighth-straight game on a walk. Redshirt freshman Rachel Pate (1-for-4) followed with a single to the pitcher, and advanced to second on an error, and allowing Kelley to trot home. The single by Pate marked her fifth-straight game with a hit.
Grove hung a zero on the board in the top of the second, striking out two batters to strand a runner in scoring position.
UMKC took advantage of another Billiken error, and tacked on two runs in the bottom half of the second, going ahead 3-2.
A two-out RBI single down the left field line in the top of the third brought SLU within one run, but Gale's (1-for-1) homer down the right field line in the bottom of the fifth sealed the deal for the 'Roos, despite the Billikens' best effort to come back, and UMKC went on to win 4-3.
The 'Roos wrap up the weekend and the Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament on Sunday, March 6, against Southeast Missouri State with the first-pitch slated for 11 a.m.
