NORMAN, Okla. – The UMKC softball team fell to No. 13/14 Oklahoma, 10-0 on Friday, March 25, at Marita Hynes Field in Norman, Oklahoma.
The 'Roos (8-15) held the nationally-ranked Sooners (22-6) scoreless through the first inning, and tallied two of their five hits in the second inning, but left both runners stranded. The high-powered offense of OU scraped together their first run of the game off sophomore pitcher Amber Grove (5-7) in the bottom half of the inning with a one-out double to left center.
Junior Alex Gale led off the third with one of her two hits in the ballgame and senior Brooke Parker followed suit with a single of her own, but UMKC couldn't push the runners across the plate, and the Sooners put together one of their two four-run innings in the same frame, making the lead 5-0 after three.
A hitless fourth for the 'Roos put Grove back in the circle quickly after the long third inning, and a bit of fatigue showed as she gave up a leadoff home run to OU, but retired the next three batters to limit the damage to just one run in the inning.
Gale picked up her second hit in the game to lead off the fifth inning, but a foul-out and two fielder's choices left the 'Roos scoreless heading to the bottom of the fifth.
Grove was unable to register an out in the fifth, allowing a single to lead off the half, hitting a batter, and allowing another single before the Sooners put the run-rule in effect with a walk off grand slam, ending the contest 10-0.
UMKC and OU will square off Saturday, March 25 at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, with first pitch slated for 2:30 p.m.
