KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC women's soccer topped CSU Bakersfield, 4-0, in the 2016 Western Athletic Conference semifinals at Durwood Soccer Stadium on Friday night. The win puts the Roos in the WAC championship match for the third time in four seasons.
The onslaught started in the 22nd minute, when sophomore Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) placed a centering pass into the box with two Roos (8-9-4) streaking free. Junior Kara Priest (Overland Park, Kan.) played a perfect fake and let the ball roll through to an open Emily Herndon (Overland Park, Kan.) who fired a shot upper 90 past the CSUB (8-10-2) goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
UMKC doubled the lead in the 41st minute on a corner from Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) who found senior Niekie Pellens (Naarden, Netherlands) for a header and the 2-0 lead.
Herndon picked up her second goal of the match on a penalty kick in the 50th minute, after a CSUB defender committed a hard foul in the box. Herndon stepped up with poise and knocked home the goal with ease.
The Roos sealed the deal with a 55th minute goal from freshman Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.). Small received a pass from Childers and sent a laser of a shot curling past the keeper from 25 yards out.
UMKC will face Seattle U in the WAC Championship on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. CT. It will mark the third time the two teams have faced off in the final match of the WAC tournament, the last coming in 2014. A win would give the Roos their first NCAA Tournament berth in program history.
