(Edinburg, Texas) - Texas-Pan American got 30 points from Javorn Farrell and held on to complete the season sweep of Kansas City on Saturday night, 68-59.
The 'Roos (7-17, 4-7 WAC) couldn't find a way to get stops in the opening period as Texas Pan American (8-19, 4-8 WAC) shot 56 percent, including only three turnovers. The action was close for most of the half, but the Broncs pulled clear after a 7-0 run that spanned four minutes to lead 26-17 with 5:41 on the clock.
Kansas City would get it down to three with four minutes on the clock, but UTPA closed the final 1:38 on a 5-1 run to take a 38-29 advantage into the break.
Javorn Farrell led all scorers with 17 points, going 7-of-9 from the floor for the Broncs, while the 'Roos were paced by Fred Chatmon with eight points. Shaquille Boga, who scored 18 on UMKC in the last meeting, had nine in the half. The Broncs also scored a 9-3 advantage in points off turnovers.
The second half saw the 'Roos come out with some defensive intensity, allowing only four points in the opening five minutes, but the offense struggled. Kansas City didn't get its first points until the 14:50 mark on a three by Frank Williams to cut the lead back to 10.
The 'Roos would eventually climb to within four on a Trinity Hall layup with 9:28 on the clock, but that was as close as it would get. The Broncs pushed it back to 11 with a 7-0 run, and held that advantage with 2:41 left, but Kansas City had one last rally in it.
Two Martez Harrison free throws capped a 10-3 rally to cut it back to four with 36 seconds left, but it was too little, too late as UTPA sealed it with free throws.
Hall led the way with 12 points for Kansas City, while Chatmon recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Harrison added 10 points as well.
The 'Roos will look to end the season long five-game skid on Thursday when it hosts Bakersfield at home. UMKC will play four of its final five regular season games at home.
