'Roos Tie School Record With 20th Win

(Kansas City, Mo.) – For second time in three days, the Missouri-Kansas City volleyball team (20-3, 8-0) knocked-off Chicago State (6-18, 0-9) hitting a WAC season-high .480 with just three errors on Sunday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center for its 16 straight victory and its school record-tying 20th win of the season.
On the defensive end, Taryn Miller led the team in digs with 16 and Melissa Hartsel was in on seven of the 'Roos nine blocks, as UMKC limited the Cougars to a -.077 hitting percentage.
The 'Roos jumped all over the Cougars early in the match, scoring 10 of the first 12 points, before building 15-3 advantage on an Emma Hagedorn kill. The Cougars closed the gap to 18-8, but did not score again, as UMKC scored the final seven points of the set, closing it out with back-to-back kills from Jessica Hendin and an ace from Kaylyn Brandt for the 25-8 victory.
In set two, the Kangaroos continued to roll building a 10-1 lead on an ace from Hendin. Chicago State would score the next point but get no closer the rest of the way and Meagan Kerns would notch back-to-back aces to give the 'Roos a 25-10 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Coming out of the break, UMKC put the Cougars away with a 25-9 win. For the third straight set, the 'Roos built a big advantage at the beginning, this time going ahead 8-1. CSU cut the lead to five two points later, but would be unable to chip away any further at the lead, with UMKC closing out the match on an ace from Nicole Wemhoff and a kill from Taylor Buhrow.
For the 'Roos, Brandt and Wemhoff set up the offense with 17 and 15 assists, respectively, while on the attack, Hendin (10 kills, .474%), Sydney Crimmins (8 kills, .533%), Hagedorn (8 kills, .500%), Skyler Muff (4 kills, .571%), Kerns (3 kills, .600%), Buhrow (3 kills, .500%) and Morgan Voorhes (2 kills, .500%) all notched at least two kills and hit over .450.
As a team, UMKC registered 12 aces, with Brandt recording three and Crimmins, Kerns and Wemhoff all adding two.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they welcome in Bakersfield to Kansas City for a 7 p.m. match at the Swinney Recreation Center.
