'Roos Take Dramatic 4-3 Win Over Bears Sunday

(Kansas City, Mo.) - Kansas City women's tennis held off a charging Central Arkansas on Sunday at Woodside Country Club, and battled for a dramatic 4-3 win in a dual that came down to the final match.
The 'Roos (3-6) dropped the first doubles match of the day at No. 2, but earned 8-5 and 8-4 wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to take the early lead in the dual with UCA (4-7).
Kansas City then looked as if it would run away with it when Maddie Schulte cruised to a straight set win at No. 6, followed shortly by another sweep at the No. 1 spot from Laura Bouet. With the 'Roos up 3-0, all they needed was a win in one of the other six matches, but the Bears battled back.
The first UCA point came at No. 5 in straight sets. With Nos. 2, 3 and 4 still on the courts and in third sets, it was going to come down to the wire. Suzan Lisenby nearly clinched it for UMKC at No. 4, but fell 11-9 in a third-set tiebreak after UCA's Krizia Buck fought off multiple match points. The Bears evened the score at 3-3 minutes later when Allison Murphy came from behind at No. 2 to knock off Eva Dalvai.
It all came down to the No. 3 spot with freshman Dimitra Stavrianakou. She trailed 5-4 in the third and final set, but rallied with the whole team watching. She tied it on her serve, then broke Kristina Horsikyan to move ahead 6-5. She then served for the match and took the 7-5 dual-clinching set.
Kansas City will head to Kansas on Wednesday for its next matchup, facing the Jayhawks at 3:00 p.m.
