(Kansas City, Mo.) - It took a strong second half effort for the Kansas City men's soccer team to get in the win column on Thursday, coming from behind for a 2-1 victory against Baker (Kan.) at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
The 'Roos (1-3) started sluggish against the Wildcats (0-3-1), who advanced to the NAIA Final Four last season. Baker tallied the game's first goal in the 42nd minute when Austin Shinney took a shot from 15 yards out that found the top left corner. The ball was played into the box and there was a scramble for it, but Shinney got enough on it to take the 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats actually had a 7-4 lead in shots during the half, but the 'Roos woke up in the final stanza, out-shooting the visitors 7-1.
The game-tying goal came in the 51st minute after sophomore Jordan Rideout (Southport, England) crossed a ball across the six-yard box on the ground to a sliding Broc Cramer (Wichita, Kan.), who slotted in in the back post. It was the freshman's first collegiate goal.
In the 64th minute junior Tom Gaus (St. Louis, Mo.) put the 'Roos in the lead when he hit a one-touch volley from eight yards out across his body and into the far post off a cross from the left side by senior midfielder Mo Ramahi (Overland Park, Kan.).
UMKC continued to put the pressure on as the game got physical, with Cramer and sophomore Sylvester Yiadom (Accra, Ghana) each coming close to scoring again for an insurance goal, but the Baker goalkeeper was up to the task.
The 'Roos finished the contest with an 11-8 advantage in shots. Junior goalkeeper Kevin Corby (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded the win in net, and logged four saves on the night.
UMKC will head to SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. contest. The Cougars are ranked No. 30 in the nation and go into the weekend with a 3-1 mark.
