
'Dons Down 'Roos In Three On Sunday Afternoon

The Mastodons grabbed an early 7-1 lead in the opening set, but a 5-1 run by the Kangaroos, including a pair of kills from both Lucas and freshman Emma Hagedorn, cut the margin to two. Fort Wayne would regain control of the set with four of the next five points before stretching its lead to a set high eight at 21-13. The 'Dons would go on to close out the set, 25-17, despite two kills by freshman Skyler Muff over the final four plays.
In the second set, Lucas put the 'Roos in front 1-0, but the next three points went to Fort Wayne. The Mastodons would build their lead to three at 7-4, but a 3-0 Kansas City rally, capped by a kill from freshman Jessica Hendin, tied the match at seven. The scored would remained tied two points later when the 'Dons went on a 7-2 run to extend the lead to five midway through the set. The 'Roos would close to within four on two more occasions, but would be unable to complete the comeback, falling 25-17 heading into intermission.
Coming out of the break, the Mastodons would close out the match with a 25-15 third set win. Fort Wayne jumped ahead early with the first three points, but four of the next six went to the 'Roos, cutting the lead to one at 5-4. After the two teams traded the next two points, Fort Wayne would reel off the next four points to build the lead to five at 10-5. A kill by senior Ella Meier would trim the margin to four, but the Kangaroos could get no closer as the 'Dons held on for the victory.
For the 'Roos, Meier and freshman Nicole Wemhoff each recorded 15 assists, while freshman Lindsay Zych had a team-high 10 digs.
The Blue & Gold will back in action again on Tuesday when they welcome in first year Summit League member Omaha to the Swinney Recreation Center for a 7 p.m. match.
