The 'Roos (2-4-2, 1-0 SL) moved to 1-0 in league play for the third consecutive year, and are unbeaten in conference openers for the sixth straight season. UMKC also moved to 5-1-1 all-time against the Mastodons (0-9, 0-1 SL), and 3-0 at home.
The Kansas City scoring opened in the first half from senior forward David Sarabia in the 23rd minute, who was on the end of a one-touch pass from Mo Ramahi after a cross from sophomore Ashley Reece. Sarabia calmly touched it past the IPFW keeper for his first goal of the season, and also moved into ninth place all-time at UMKC in both goals (15) and points (38).
The 'Roos controlled much of the opening half, and took that 1-0 lead into the break. UMKC also had a 4-1 advantage in shots.
The second stanza saw the 'Dons come out strong, as the 'Roos were content to take the 1-0 win, but a turnover on the back line in the 73rd minute gave the ball to IPFW's Jose Rodriguez, who found Corey Tom wide open in the middle of the box for the easy finish.
The Mastodons out-shot the Kangaroos 6-4 in the half, but neither team could get a finish after that, forcing overtime.
The overtime period was back-and-forth, but the 'Roos ended it in the 99th minute when Rideout tallied his first career game-winner on a one-touch finish off a pass from junior Tom McCarthy just inside the 18-yard box.
Freshman goalkeeper Connor Sparrow also recorded his first career win in the net, making three saves.
Next up, Kansas City will host Central Arkansas on Wednesday night at Durwood Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
