
Kangaroos Drop Both Games in Saturday?s Doubleheader to NDSU

(Fargo, N.D.) - Saturday afternoon, the UMKC softball team (18-25, 6-11 SL) dropped both games in a doubleheader to the North Dakota State Bison (30-16, 14-3 SL), 7-5 and 4-0.
In game one, the Bison took an early 1-0 lead in the first when designated player Cristina Borek singled to right off pitcher Deanna Friese (9-13) as a runner scored from third.
Next inning after two leadoff singles by outfielder Marlee Maples and infielder Chelsea Hartwig for UMKC, outfielder Megan Vicino reached first on a fielder's choice and later advanced to second as Maples scored and Hartwig advanced to third. Next up, pinch hitter Emily Ott grounded out to second, but Vicino advanced to third as pinch runner Lea Diaz scored to give UMKC a 2-1 lead.
In the third with two outs and a runner on third for North Dakota State, outfielder Taylor Mortensen RBI-singled to center to tie the game. Next up, Borek doubled to left and later advanced to third on the throw as Mortensen scored to make it a 3-2 ball game.
In the fourth with two on, the Bison extended their lead to four when infielder Katie Tamayo homered to left. Later in the inning with two on and two outs, Borek singled to center as a runner scored from second to make it a 7-2 ball game.
Two innings later for UMKC with two on and one out, UMKC cut the deficit to four when outfielder Anna Sokolik doubled to right-center as Maples moved to third and infielder Megan Ussary scored from third. Next up after Vicino grounded out, pitcher Cinda Ramos (8-11) singled to short to drive in Maples as Sokolik advanced to third. Later with infielder Kaelene Curry at the plate, Ramos was caught stealing at second to end the inning.
In the seventh with one out and runners at the corners, pinch hitter Katie Henning grounded out to second, but infielder Kelly Fischer scored from third to make it a two-score game. Next up, Maples lined out to short for the final out, despite going 2-for-4 and scoring twice.
In game two with the bases loaded and one out for North Dakota State, Mortensen flew out to center, but Tamayo scored to make it 1-0 in the first.
In the sixth with two on and one out, same score, infielder Brea Konz doubled left as both runners scored. Later in the inning with two outs, outfielder Alex Sobrero singled and drove in pinch hitter Presley Glaser to make it a 4-0 ball game.
Next inning, the Kangaroos were retired in order as Bison pitcher Whitney Johnson (10-8) finished with a no-hitter while recording 10 strikeouts and one walk.
Tomorrow, the Kangaroos will conclude their three-game set with North Dakota State at 12 p.m.
