(Macomb, Ill.) - The Western Illinois Leathernecks earned a 2-1 win over Kansas City on Saturday afternoon, earning a spot in the conference tournament next weekend. The 'Roos will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament, starting Friday, and will play at 11:00 a.m.
Kansas City (7-9-2, 5-2 SL) will have to wait for results to come in Saturday night to decide who it will face in the semifinal match-up, either IUPUI or Western Illinois (5-8-4, 3-2-1 SL). The 'Roos can also still win a share of the Summit League regular season crown if Eastern Illinois defeats Oakland.
The contest was tied at the half, with each team taking four shots. UMKC tallied three of its attempts on goal, but WIU collected saves on each.
The Leathernecks struck first in the 49th minute when leading scorer Nathan Bruinsma got a pass from leading assist man Charlie Bales for a goal.
UMKC got on the board in the 55th minute on an apparent own goal to tie it at one. WIU out-shot the 'Roos 9-5 in the final half, and put the pressure on late, getting the game-winner in the 73rd minute. The goal came from Drew Edmond, assisted by Oscar Ortega.
The Leathernecks out-shot UMKC by a narrow 13-5 margin, with both goalkeepers making five saves.
The 'Roos will await results tonight and prepare for their 13th Summit League Championships appearance in the 15-year tenure of head coach Rick Benben on Friday in Macomb.
