(Indianapolis, Ind.) - The UMKC Kangaroos got after the IUPUI Jaguars on the glass on Tuesday night in Indianapolis, but in the end it was the 24 turnovers, a 21-point deficit on the free throw line, and a crazy ending to regulation that caused the 'Roos to drop their fifth straight, 83-74 in overtime.
IUPUI (8-8, 2-2 SL) extended his six consecutive games, all at home. The Kangaroos (7-10, 1-4 SL) came into the contest knowing they needed to do a better job in the rebounding department with only 31 boards in their last two games combined, and they accomplished that goal, securing a 36-to-26 edge on the glass. The Jags came in as the top offensive rebounding team in the conference, and UMKC held them to only eight.
The Jaguars jumped out early in the contest, but neither team led by more than five points in a tightly contested opening stanza that saw four ties and six lead changes. UMKC went into the break down 35-31 despite shooting 52 percent overall, and 5-of-7 from three-point range. IUPUI took advantage of 10 UMKC turnovers, and out-scored the 'Roos on the line for the small lead.
The second period saw IUPUI jump out to its biggest lead of the night in the early going at 10, but UMKC chipped away at that advantage over the next five minutes, and thanks to an eight-point flurry by Mike Gholston, the 'Roos had a 53-49 lead with 11:55 on the clock.
UMKC held a small margin until the five minute mark, when the teams seemingly went back and forth the rest of the way.
The Jags tied the game at 67 with just more than 40 seconds left in regulation, giving UMKC the ball, but a turnover on the other end with 34 seconds left sent the ball back to the Jags with, what seemingly was going to be the last possession. The shot clock didn't get re-set though, and IUPUI was forced to take a desperation three-pointer with six seconds left that went out-of-bounds, giving UMKC another shot after a lengthly delay to review the missed re-set.
The 'Roos didn't get so lucky on the next call though. A UMKC player was pushed over the scorer's table moving the ball up the court, but no foul was called, and the ball went out of bounds, giving it back to IUPUI with a second left. Another turnover on the in-bounds gave UMKC the ball, but its attempt as the buzzer expired was off, and they headed to OT.
In overtime, the Jags took over, out-scoring the 'Roos 16-7, including 12-of-14 from the line to seal it. In the end IUPUI out-scored the 'Roos on the foul line by 21 points, going 29-of-39, while UMKC went 8-of-10. The 'Roos season-high 24 turnovers turned into 31 IUPUI points as well.
Junior Thomas Staton set a career-high with 15 points to lead five 'Roos in double figures, while Bernard Kamwa set a career-best scoring mark with 12 points. Kirk Korver had 13 points, Reggie Chamberlain tallied 11, and Gholston had 10.
UMKC will come back home to face South Dakota on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. in a TV doubleheader, with the women facing the Coyotes at 4:05 p.m.
