
'Roos Open Up Summit League Play In Vegas With First Cluster

THIS WEEK
The UMKC women's tennis team (2-8) will head to Las Vegas, Nev., for the first Summit League cluster of the season. The 'Roos will open up on Thursday at 3 p.m. with IUPUI (1-13) before taking on IPFW (16-3) on Friday at 11 a.m. and Centenary (0-4) later in the day at 4 p.m. On Saturday, the 'Roos will finish the cluster with Southern Utah (3-1) at 11 a.m. On Monday, meanwhile, the squad will return home to host Southwest Baptist (2-5) at 3 p.m.
THE OPPONENTS
IUPUI enters the cluster with a 1-13 record overall, picking up their its only win over Bradley on Feb. 19. In the match, all three of the Jaguar double's teams picked up wins, while sophomore Vanessa Whyte (No. 2), sophomore Alisha Cummings (No. 3), junior Lee Matthews (No. 5) and sophomore Jesika Bays (No. 6) all registered singles wins.
IPFW enters the cluster with a 16-3 record overall and a six match win streak. Senior Ingrid Ballus leads the Mastodons with 26 total wins on the season, 16 from the No. 2 spot in dual matches, while sophomore Caterina Kiefer (23), senior Amy Recht (20), senior Yuka Kobayashi (20) and junior Raquel Vescovi (20) have all posted 20 or more wins on the season. Recht, meanwhile, is the three time defending Summit League Player of the Year.
Centenary enters the cluster with an 0-4 record and is coming off a 9-0 loss to UT-Tyler. Seeing action this season for the Ladies has been No. 1 sophomore Isadora Bickham, No. 2 sophomore Holden Penney, No. 3 freshman Michelle Gaubert, No. 4 freshman Holly Clark and No. 5 junior Catlin Orschel. Doubling up has been Bickham/Penney and Gaubert/Clark.
Southern Utah enters the cluster with a 3-1 record, picking up wins over Cal State Bakersfield, Dominican (CA) and Dixie State. The Thunderbirds are led by sophomore Olia Tatarchenko's perfect 4-0 record, while senior Kirrily Burden, freshman Danica Ingwaldson, freshman Alex Ivanova, junior Ksusha Nazarova and freshman Afton Staheli have all picked up three wins this season.
Southwest Baptist enters the weekend with a 2-5 record overall, but will face Emporia State, Evangel and Washburn before heading to Kansas City to take on the 'Roos. Freshman Mehak Singh leads the Bearcats with a perfect 7-0 record, while senior Jenna Hendrickson's 4-3 record is the squad's second best mark.
LAST TIME OUT
The 'Roos posted a 1-3 record over the previous four matches, picking up their lone win over Bradley, 6-1, while falling to Houston, 1-6, Iowa State, 0-7, and Kansas, 0-7. Over the four matches, the 'Roos' No. 2 doubles team of sophomores Laura Bouet and Suzan Lisenby led the way, notching three wins in the four matches. In singles play, sophomore Eva Dalvai posted a team-best 2-2 record.
YAKOMINICH APPEARS IN ITA RANKINGS
On Jan. 4, junior Jillian Yakominich became the first UMKC women's team individual to be ranked by the ITA in the Central Region. In the rankings, the Wichita, Kan., native was placed 17th, behind player's from Arkansas, Minnesota, Wichita State, Tulsa, Iowa, Oklahoma State and Saint Louis.
BOUET NAMED SUMMIT LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore Laura Bouet was named the Women's Tennis Summit League Player of the Week on Feb. 22, for the third time in her career honor after picking up a pair of wins last week against UALR.
Against UALR, the Gap, France, native accounted for half of UMKC's wins in the match, scoring a singles victory at the No. 2 position over Veronique Luksich (7-5, 5-7, 6-3) and combining with Suzan Lisenby for a doubles triumph at No. 2 over the duo of Luksich/Steen-Rosten (8-2). Bouet is tied for third on UMKC's all-time list with 23 singles wins and is tied for fourth with 16 career doubles wins.
THE LONE SENIOR
Overland Park, Kan., native Chelsea Horner returns to the 'Roos for her fourth season in the Blue and Gold, where she will be the lone senior on this year's team. Last season, Horner registered seven singles wins, with a school-record six coming from the No. 3 position, while also moving into sixth place all-time with 17 career singles wins. In doubles play, the senior racked up 10 wins, the fourth most in a single-season, placing her second all-time with 17 wins.
SCHOOL RECORD WINS
The 'Roos ended the 2010 season with a school record 10 wins, topping the previous record of eight set by the 1991-92 squad. That season, the 'Roos defeated only one Division I squad when they beat Oral Roberts, 5-4. Last season the team beat nine Division I opponents, including Summit League foes Southern Utah, Western Illinois, Centenary, Oakland, IUPUI and South Dakota State. The six league wins were also a school record, topping the four regular season league wins from the 2009 season and the five total league wins by the 1999-00 team that registered three regular season league wins and two wins in the league tournament.
IN THE RECORD BOOKS
In 2010, Laura Bouet registered 18 wins, breaking Anne Lewis' previous school record of 10 wins from the 1987-88 season, while sophomore Jillian Yakominich moved into second place on the list with 12 wins. Freshmen Eva Dalvai and Suzan Lisenby, meanwhile, amassed 11 wins last season, tying them for third on the all-time list.
Yakominich, meanwhile, is second on the all-time career singles wins list with 25, two behind the leader, while Bouet (24) is third, Chelsea Horner is fifth (20), Dalvai (16) is seventh and Lisenby is tied for eighth (15).
In doubles play, Yakominich, Lisenby and Bouet all registered 11 wins, tying them for the most in a single season in UMKC history, while Horner and Ball each notched 10 wins and Dalvai nine to place in a tie for fourth and seventh all-time. Yakominich, meanwhile, holds the school record for the most doubles wins in a career with 21, while Horner is second on the list with 20, Lisenby and Bouet are tied for fourth with 16, Ball is seventh with 15 and Dalvai is tied for 10th with 12.

Yakominich and Dalvai, meanwhile, sit second and third on the list after posting 12 and 11 wins, respectively. Bouet, Dalvai and Yakominich are the 13th, 14th and 15th UMKC student-athletes to be named to the all-league team, joining Manju Subramanian, Kala Subramanian (2), Erin Rosenberg (4), Yelena Podorozhansky (2), Emily Lindsay (2) and Katherine Rist.
ITA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM AWARD
The UMKC women's tennis team earned its third consecutive ITA All-Academic Team Award in 2010. The 'Roos, who are one of two team representatives from The Summit League, also had a pair of student-athletes be selected as ITA Scholar Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year, as Chelsea Horner and Suzan Lisenby were both were selected as ITA Scholar Athletes.
The ITA All-Academic Team Award goes to any ITA program that has a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above (4.00 scale). The ITA Scholar Athletes, meanwhile, must be a varsity letterwinner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (4.00 scale) for the current school year and have been enrolled at his or her present school for at least two semesters.
HEAD COACH KENDELL HALE
Kendell Hale is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the UMKC women's tennis program. Overall, the 2010-11 season will be Hale's 17th as a collegiate head coach, where he has compiled a 288-194 overall record. In three seasons at the helm, Hale has coached six all-league selections (four first/two second) and was selected at the 2009 USPTA Missouri Valley College Coach of the Year.
In 2010, Hale guided the 'Roos to a school record 10 victories and a 6-2 mark in Summit League play. UMKC finished third in the regular season standings to qualify for the league tournament for the first time since only the top four teams advanced. A trio of student-athletes - Laura Bouet, Eva Dalvai and Jillian Yakominich - each earned all-Summit League honors.
Before joining the UMKC coaching staff, Hale spent 11 years as the head coach at Rockhurst University, where he led the Hawks to nine NCAA Tournament appearances.
