Senior guard Reggie Chamberlain drove the lane and dropped in a layup with 14 seconds left to tie it at 49, and the Terriers missed a long three for the win, forcing overtime. The 'Roos scored the first five points of the extra period, and never looked back, hitting 10-of-10 from the line to seal the win.
The Kangaroos (2-4) came out with a strong effort on the defensive end in the opening period, holding the Terriers (2-3) to only 32 percent shooting and forcing 11 turnovers. UMKC didn't shoot the ball well on offense, but got 12 of its 24 points off WC miscues.
The half was close throughout though, with Wofford taking advantage of the 'Roos on the glass with a 21-15 rebound edge, including nine offensive boards. The biggest lead of the period for the 'Roos came at the 6:09 mark at six points after a put-back from Fred Chatmon, and they took a 24-20 advantage into the break.
It was a balanced effort on offense for UMKC, with three players tallying five points. The Terriers were paced by forward Domas Rinksalis with 10 points.
The Kangaroos continued the strong defensive effort in the final stanza, but the Terriers did shoot a higher percentage from the floor (47.8 percent). A 7-2 run to open the half gave the lead to WC for the first time since the 9:12 mark of the opening period. From there, the game saw six ties and six lead changes though, with the most significant coming late.
It came when Wofford senior guard Brad Loesing drilled a three-pointer to give the Terriers a 47-45 lead with 1:24 left to play. The Kangaroos missed on their next two possessions, forcing them to foul with 32 seconds left. The Terriers hit both free throws to make it a four-point game, but fouled Chamberlain on the next possession, putting him at the line to cut it back to two with 23 seconds remaining.
A foul on the other end put WC at the line, but the Terriers missed the front end of the 1-and-1, giving the ball back to UMKC, and setting the scene for Chamberlain's drive.
The big bucket in overtime came from senior Michael Gholston, who drove the baseline and extended the 'Roos lead to five with 1:24 left on a lay-up. Chamberlain hit eight free throws the rest of the way to clinch it.
The Kangaroos were out-rebounded 44-30, but hit 23-of-26 from the foul line, including 10-of-10 from Chamberlain, who had a game-high 22 points. Chamberlain scored 17 after halftime, while sophomore forward Trinity Hall put up 12 of his 16 after the break. The Kangaroos forced the Terriers into 21 turnovers and 37.5 percent from the field. UMKC shot 33.3 percent.
UMKC will face Longwood in the winner's bracket Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (CT). The Lancers defeated Prairie View A&M 70-67 in the noon game to advance.
