(Fort Wayne, Ind.) - The UMKC men's soccer squad was just minutes away from clinching a berth in the conference tournament, but a goal by IPFW with two minutes to play forced overtime, and eventually a 3-3 tie on Wednesday night.
UMKC (5-7-3, 2-1-2 SL) took the lead on three separate occasions during the contest, but each time the Mastodons (6-9-2, 2-2-1 SL) answered with a game-tying strike. UMKC needed a win to guarantee a spot in the Summit League Tournament.
The scoring opened in the 13th minute on a goal from freshman forward Jordan Rideout. He took a shot that was blocked, but got the rebound and put it away to make it 1-0. The Kangaroos took the advantage into halftime, as well as an 11-8 shot advantage.
The Mastodons tallied the first goal of a wild second half in the 53rd minute off a corner kick, but just 34 seconds later, senior midfielder Chris Markey scored on a free kick from 30 yards out to make it 2-1.
In the 73rd minute, IPFW was awarded a penalty kick, with Max Touloute converting to make it 2-2. UMKC defender Michael Oakley and goalkeeper Kevin Corby were given yellow cards after the call was made.
It seemed to be in the favor of the 'Roos though, as they got another goal from Rideout, this time on a rebound off a breakaway shot by junior Tom Black in the 82nd minute. IPFW shocked the 'Roos with a goal to tie it in the 89th minute though, as Jason Mills headed one in to force overtime.
In overtime, UMKC out-shot IPFW 6-4, but none of the chances found the back of the net. For the game the 'Roos tallied a season-high 25 shots, while allowing 23 from the Mastodons.
UMKC will be at home for its last two games, starting with the final conference game of the year on Saturday night against first-place Western Illinois at 7:00 p.m.
