
UMKC Takes Down Southern Utah For First Summit League Win

In the opening set, the 'Roos fell behind by as many as six at 10-4, but a 9-0
rally, with junior Ella
Meier serving, put UMKC in front for the first time at 13-10. The
Thunderbirds then closed to within two on the next play, but the Kangaroos
scored 12 of the final 18 points, featuring four Knoche kills, to take a 1-0
lead in the match.
In the second set, the 'Roos extended their lead to 2-0 with a 25-15 win. The two teams traded points early, with UMKC holding a 5-4 lead nine points in. The Kangaroos then scored the next three points to push the lead to four at 8-4. Southern Utah would pull to within two at 13-11, but a 12-4 run, including kills from Knoche, Beck, senior Demetria Williams and Lucas, gave the Kangaroos a two-set advantage at intermission.
Coming out the break, SUU cut the UMKC lead in half with a 25-22 third set win, but the Kangaroos closed out the match in the fourth set with a 27-25 win. In the fourth set, neither team built more than a two-point advantage until Southern Utah built a three point lead late at 21-18. The Thunderbirds would maintain their three-point lead at 23-20 before an error and a Knoche kill closed the lead to one at 23-22. Southern Utah then pushed the lead to two and was serving for set point before committing five errors over the final six points of the match give the 'Roos the 3-1 victory.
As a team, UMKC hit .228, while registering nine blocks. Individually, Meier led the 'Roos with 39 assists and 14 digs, while seniors Nicole Kerkman and Erin Wellwood recorded 23 and 11 digs, respectively.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Wednesday when they face future Summit League opponent Nebraska-Omaha at 6:30 p.m. at the Swinney Recreation Center.
