
Friese Powers 'Roos To Series Finale Win Over Oakland

Kansas City, Mo. - Freshman Deanna Friese struckout 13 Golden Grizzly batters on Saturday, one day after fanning 12 Oakland hitters, to lead the 'Roos to a 2-0 victory at Loyola Park and keep the squad's postseason hopes alive.
Friese opened the game by striking out the first five batters of the game, before the 'Roos took the first lead of the game with a single run in the bottom of the second.
Betsy Hanley led off the inning by reaching on a hit by the pitch and senior Carli Slagle, after being honored as the 'Roos lone senior on Senior Day, followed with a double to right center, putting runners on second and third. Chelsea Hartwig then popped up in foul territory and an alert Hanley tagged from third when no one from Oakland was covering home, giving UMKC the 1-0 lead.
Friese continued to roll on the mound, as the Kennesaw, Ga., native did not allow a base runner until the top of the fifth when she walked a batter and gave up one hit, two of Oakland's only three base runners in the game.
The score would remain 1-0, until the bottom of the sixth when Emily Ott blasted an OU offering over the center field fence giving the squad a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Friese would take care of the Grizzlies in the seventh to give the 'Roos the three game sweep.
In the game, Friese tossed all seven innings, allowing one hit, while striking out 13. At the plate, Kaelene Curry and Slagle each finished with two hits, while Ott and Hartwig notched the lone RBIs.
UMKC will now wait for the outcome of today's North Dakota State-South Dakota State contest to see if they or the Jacks will advance to The Summit League tournament on Fargo, N.D. on May 14-16.
