
Sokolik's Big Day Leads 'Roos To Doubleheader Split With SDSU

Brookings, S.D. -- The UMKC softball team (9-23, 4-7) splits its doubleheader with South Dakota State on Friday at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium behind a big day from sophomore Anna Sokolik. In the first game, the 'Roos shut out the Jackrabbits, 10-0, before falling 11-3 in the second.
Sokolik (5-6) finished the day 5-of-6 at the plate with six RBIs, three runs scored, two stolen bases and her Summit League leading fifth triple of the year, while picking up the win in game one with a complete game three-hit shutout.
In the first game, the 'Roos got the scoring started with a five-run second inning after a scoreless first inning where Sokolik picked up two of her five strikeouts. Taylor Hill led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on Megan Vicino's one-out single. Kaelene Curry then loaded the bases with the squad's third single of the inning, before Kelly Fischer's two-run single gave the 'Roos the lead. Sokolik followed up Fischer's single with a two-run triple, before scoring on freshman Emily Ott's RBI single that gave UMKC a 5-0 lead in the contest.
Sokolik would notch two more strikeouts in the bottom of the second before the 'Roos tacked on another run when Danielle Bennefeld doubled and later came around to score on an SDSU error in the third.
UMKC would put their final runs on the board with a four-run fifth inning to reach the final score of 10-0. In the inning, Janessa Swinney got the squad started with a two-out single, before advancing to second with her second stolen base of the day. Back-to-back walks to Curry and Fischer then loaded the bases for the Sokolik, who doubled to left-center to pick up her third, fourth and fifth RBIs of the game. Ott then singled in Sokolik for her team-leading 21st RBI of the year.
In the game, all nine 'Roo starters notched at least one hit en route to a season-high 13 hits, while nine of the squad's 10 runs came with two outs. At the plate, Ott finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Curry and Fischer each scored two runs.
In game two, the 'Roos jumped ahead early, 1-0, when Lauren Rodrigues singled in Sokolik who had walked earlier in the inning.
The Jacks quickly responded though, capturing their first lead of the day with two runs in the first and one in the second off starter Deanna Friese to take a 3-1 lead into the third.
The 'Roos then tied the game in the top of the third with two runs off SDSU starter Kori Seidlitz. Chelsea Hartwig got the 'Roos started with a one-out double before Sokolik's single to left-center drove in a pinch-running Rashonda Stanley. The 'Roos would get their final run of the game later in the inning when Bennefeld's RBI single drove in Ott who had singled earlier in the inning.
The Jacks would then break the game open with six runs in the bottom of inning off Friese, before tacking on two more runs in the fifth to end the game.
On the base paths, Sokolik and Rodrigues each stole a base, while Ott swiped two. On the mound, Friese (4-11) took the loss, allowing nine runs in 2.2 innings.
The two teams will wrap-up their series tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
