Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC softball team (7-16) beat IUPUI, 12-4, in five innings at Loyola Park behind an eight run second inning. Taylor Hill led the 'Roos in the contest, as the freshman finished 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.
After a scoreless first inning, the UMKC bats came alive with eight runs on six hits in the second, as 14 'Roos came to the plate in the inning. Hill got the scoring started when her RBI double up the right field scored Rashonda Stanley and Lauren Rodrigues.
UMKC continued the scoring when Anna Sokolik smacked a double of her own to score Hill and Megan Vicino and put the squad up 4-0. The next batter, Kaelene Curry, then singled and advanced to second, putting runners on second and third for Kelly Fischer. Fischer then knocked a two-run single to right, scoring Curry and Sokolik. Emily Ott then singled to score Fischer before coming around to score the final run of the inning on Amanda Kinn's infield fly.
IUPUI fought back into the game in its next at-bat, belting three home runs of starter Deanna Friese in the top of the third to cut the score in half.
The two teams would go scoreless in their next two at-bats before UMKC put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with four more runs. Hill again got the scoring started, this time sending the IUPUI pitch over the center field fence. The 'Roos then tacked on two more runs on Ott's RBI double before Betsy Hanley's single drove in Ott to end the game.
Friese (4-9) picked up the win on the mound for the 'Roos, while Taya Upkes pitched 2.1 innings, allowing no runs and three hits. At the plate, all nine starters reached base, while Fischer, Ott, Hanley, Hill and Sokolik all notched multiple hits.
The two teams will be back in action again tomorrow when they conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
