
Pitchers Power 'Roos To Doubleheader Sweep Of Shockers

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC softball team swept its doubleheader on Wednesday from Wichita State, taking the first game 2-1 and the second game 4-0 in six innings. Starting pitchers Anna Sokolik and Deanna Friese led the 'Roos on the day, as each pitcher reached their career-highs in strikeouts at nine.
In the first game, the 'Roos got on the scoreboard first, putting a run on the board in the bottom of the third on an sacrifice fly from Kelly Fischer that scored Sokolik after the pitcher had tripled earlier in the inning.
The Shockers then tied the game at one in the fifth on an RBI single from Brittney Osborn.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the sixth when UMKC would recapture the lead. Kaelene Curry led the inning off with a walk and advanced to third off a Fischer double. The next batter, freshman Emily Ott, singled to right to knock in Curry to give the 'Roos the 2-1 lead.
Sokolik would then retire the Wichita State batters in order in the seventh to seal the win.
On the mound, Sokolik tossed a complete game, five-hitter, allowing one earned run while striking out nine. At the plate, Fischer finished 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the squad.
In the second game, the 'Roos received another strong performance from their starting pitcher, as Friese went all six innings, allowing four hits and no runs, while striking out nine.
In the game, UMKC struck early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first.
Curry got the scoring started by leading off the inning with a walk, stealing second and coming around to score on Fischer's RBI single. After advancing to second on the throw, Fischer stole third and scored on Betsy Hanley's RBI ground out.
The 'Roos added to their lead in the third when Lauren Rodrigues knocked in Curry from second, to push the lead to 3-0.
UMKC would tack on its final run in the fifth when Hanley's ground ball scored Curry from third.
After retiring the Shockers in the top of the sixth, the game was then called in the bottom of the sixth due to rain.
In the game, Curry, Fischer and Rodrigues notched two hits apiece for the 'Roos, with Curry scoring three runs of the four UMKC runs.
The Blue and Gold will be in action again this weekend when they welcome in IPFW for its Summit League opener starting Friday at 3 p.m.
