Monroe, La. -- The UMKC softball (1-2) team notched its first win of the year with a 3-2 defeat of Jackson State in the final game of the ULM Mardi Gras Classic. Freshman Deanna Friese paced the 'Roos as the pitcher picked up her first collegiate win, allowing three hits and one earned run, while striking out nine in a complete game effort.
The 'Roos took the early lead in the contest, putting single runs on the scoreboard in each of the first two innings. In the first, the squad got a two-out RBI double from Chelsea Hartwig, scoring Kelly Fischer from second. In the second inning, the team again scored via an RBI double, this time from Danielle Bennefeld, scoring Amanda Kinn.
The Tigers cut the lead in half in the top of the third when a UMKC error allowed Kenesha Phillips to score. UMKC pushed the lead back to two in the fourth inning when Ashley Whiteside had an RBI groundout that scored Anna Sokolik from third after she had tripled earlier in the inning.
Jackson State would tack on another run in the fifth, but could not complete the comeback against Friese and the rest of the Kangaroos.
The Blue and Gold will be in action again next weekend when it heads to Lubbock, Texas, to take part in the Texas Tech Tournament.
