Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC men's soccer team tallied its eighth win of the season in the 1-0 victory over Illinois-Chicago on Tuesday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field. Freshman Zachary Balthazar scored in the 59th minute and senior Ken Cooper posted his fourth consecutive shutout in helping the 'Roos improve to 8-3-2 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, Balthazar found the back of the net in the 59th minute to put UMKC on top. Luke Harman rocketed a shot on goal that UIC goalkeeper Peter Kikloski stopped, but it squirted away into the right side of the box. The opportunistic Balthazar then was able to collect the ball before tapping in his first career goal for the game-winner.
Cooper collected four saves in the contest to tally his fourth straight and seventh shutout of the season. The seven shutouts are tied for the UMKC single season record.
UMKC held a slight 11-10 advantage in overall shots and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The 'Roos also had eight corner kicks to just three for the Flames.
UMKC (8-3-2) will return to Summit League play on Saturday when it hosts IPFW in a 7 p.m. contest at DSSRF. At halftime, the 'Roos will honor their five seniors in John Bayron Sosa, Coady Andrews, Brian Quintana, Cole Roentved and Cooper.
