'Roos Begin Second Round Of League Play At Southern Utah On Saturday

THE SETTING
The UMKC men's basketball team will begin the second round of Summit League play with a key three-game road trip beginning with a Saturday night match-up at Southern Utah. The 'Roos and Thunderbirds will meet at Centrum Arena in Cedar City, Utah, beginning at 8:30 p.m. (CT).

LAST TIME OUT
The 'Roos dropped their second straight close decision, falling 73-69 to North Dakota State on Tuesday night at the Swinney Recreation Center. UMKC led by 12 points with 14:44 remaining, but the Bison then caught fire, making six straight three-point attempts to turn their deficit into a three-point lead. NDSU then maintained the advantage for the remainder of the night to hand the 'Roos their fifth loss in six games. Trey McKinney-Jones led a group of three UMKC players in double digits, finishing with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
THE COACHES
Head Coach Matt Brown is in his third season with the UMKC men's basketball program, where he has compiled an 27-56 overall record and has coached three players to all-Summit League recognition. Former forward Dane Brumagin was a second team all-league honoree and Reggie Hamilton was an all-newcomer team selection in 2007-08, while Brumagin earned an honorable mention all-league nod in 2008-09. Last season, Brown guided the 'Roos to a pair of wins over Missouri Valley Conference foes Wichita State and Bradley. It was just the third time in school history for the team to beat two MVC teams in the same season.
Roger Reid is in his third season as the head coach of the Southern Utah men's basketball program, where he has posted a 27-54 overall record. A 36-year coaching veteran, Reid has coached five NCAA Tournament and one National Invitational Tournament squads.

The Kangaroos picked up their second league victory of the season by beating Southern Utah, 53-50, on Jan. 2 at Municipal Auditorium. Junior Bakari Lewis propelled UMKC to the victory, as the guard drained a three-pointer from the top of the key with 17 seconds remaining to give his squad the win. Overall three 'Roo players - Jay Couisnard, Spencer Johnson and LaTreze Mushatt - finished with 11 points to pace the squad in scoring. SUU guard Davis Baker, meanwhile, was the only T-Bird in double figures, finishing with 20 points, all of which came in the second half.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN UTAH
The Thunderbirds bring a five-game losing streak into Saturday's contest that has dropped their record to 5-15 overall and 1-8 in league play. SUU's last victory came at home over North Dakota State on Jan. 7 by the score of 85-79.
Guard Davis Baker is the only Thunderbird player in double digits this season coming in at 17.1 points per game, which ranks fourth in Summit League play. Baker is shooting .471 from the floor and .843 from the charity stripe and is also tied for the team-lead with 5.0 rebound per game.
