LAST TIME OUT
The Kangaroos came up on the short end of a 74-69 decision when they hosted South Dakota State last Thursday at Municipal Auditorium. The Jackrabbits used a strong second half to pull out the road victory, as they shot 60.9 percent over the final 20 minutes to go along with making 15-of-16 attempts from the charity stripe. Trey McKinney-Jones led a group of four 'Roo players in double digits, finishing with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
THE COACHES
Head Coach Matt Brown is in his third season with the UMKC men's basketball program, where he has compiled an 26-52 overall record and has coached three players to all-Summit League recognition. Former forward Dane Brumagin was a second team all-league honoree and Reggie Hamilton was an all-newcomer team selection in 2007-08, while Brumagin earned an honorable mention all-league nod in 2008-09. Last season, Brown guided the 'Roos to a pair of wins over Missouri Valley Conference foes Wichita State and Bradley. It was just the third time in school history for the team to beat two MVC teams in the same season.
Greg Kampe is in his 26th season as the head coach of the Oakland men's basketball program, where he has compiled a 430-321 overall record. Kampe guided the Golden Grizzlies to the NCAA Tournament in 2004-05 and has led the squad to seven 20-win seasons, including a Division I record 23 victories last season.
SCOUTING OAKLAND
The Golden Grizzlies enter Thursday's contest having won five straight games and 7-of-9 contests to push their overall record to 11-7 and 5-0 in Summit League play. Last weekend, OU held off Oral Roberts for a 67-64 win in Tulsa before routing Centenary, 88-50, in Shreveport.
Four Oakland players are averaging at least 9.8 points per game with three in double figures. Center Keith Benson is tops on the squad by averaging a double-double with 17.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. The Michigan native is shooting .516 from the floor and .761 from the charity stripe, making 86-of-113 attempts. Forward Derick Nelson scores 11.8 points per game to go along with 6.6 boards, while Johnathon Jones averages 11.4 points and 5.8 assists per game. Jones also has a team-high 36 steals.
Oakland is shooting 43.2 percent from the floor, but just 29.2 percent from long range en route to 73.1 points a night. The squad is also +5.3 on the glass and it has nearly made more free throws (301) than its opposition has attempted (305).

UMKC surpassed its 2008-09 win total when it picked up its eighth victory of the season in the Jan. 2 win over Southern Utah. Additionally, the squad has four road wins and a pair of conference victories thus far in 2009-10. The four road wins surpass last year's total (3), and the team's next Summit League victory will match last year's mark.
BK DOES IT AGAIN
Junior Bakari Lewis is developing a knack for taking and making the big shot, as the guard connected for the game-winner for the second time this season on Jan. 2. Lewis drained a three-pointer from the top of the key with 17 seconds remaining to lift the 'Roos to the 53-50 win over Southern Utah. SIX'S COMPANY
