
UMKC Drops Close One To IPFW, 1-0

Fort Wayne, Ind. ? Despite out-hitting IPFW 6-5 and posting no errors to the Mastodons four, UMKC dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 loss on Friday afternoon. The Kangaroos falls to 7-26 on the season and 2-11 in The Summit League. IPFW improves to 11-14 overall and 6-3 in league play. Danielle Bennefeld went two-for-four on the day to lead UMKC.
Both teams were having trouble converting hits into runs, as UMKC left seven runners stranded on base while IPFW left eight on.
It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh inning that the Mastodons were able to seal the win after Sarah Swanson hit an RBI single to score Heather Genovese. The Kangaroos had big chances to score in both the first and fifth innings, as they left two runners stranded on base.
Sam Hurst threw 6.2 innings and despite only giving up five hits, she suffers the loss for the Kangaroos. Hurst retired 12 batters and only walked four.
UMKC and IPFW will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 11:00 a.m. to close out the three-game series.
