UMKC 5 ? Morehead State 4
The Kangaroos went down early, giving up three runs in the third inning and wouldn't get on the scoreboard until the fifth, scoring one run. Danielle Bennefeld got the bats going with a double down the left field line and moved to third off a Kaelene Curry ground out. Bennefeld would score off of another groundout, this time by Ashley Whiteside, making the score 3-1.
Morehead State added a run in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
UMKC added another run in sixth with Betsy Hanley scoring.
The Kangaroos came alive in the seventh and scored when they needed to for the 5-4 win. Morehead State seemed to have the seventh and the game under control, recording two quick outs. But Amanda Evans got a two-out rally started with a single to center field. Back-to-back walks landed Chelsea Hartwig and Hanley on first and second, putting Evans on third and bringing up Slagle. The junior cleared the bases with an RBI double to give the Kangaroos a 5-4 edge, but Morehead State would still get a shot in the bottom of the seventh.
UMKC allowed two batters to get on base in the seventh but wouldn't allow them to score and recorded their first win of the 2009 season.
Eastern Kentucky 4 ? UMKC 1
Eastern Kentucky had a 3-0 lead after the conclusion of the third inning, scoring one run in the second and two in the third. UMKC's opponent took a 4-0 lead following the fifth inning.
The Kangaroos left nine runners stranded on base but were finally able to send someone across the plate in the top of the seventh. Ashley Whiteside left off the inning with a single to left field and moved to second on a throwing error. Kelly Fischer singled to the pitcher and moved Whiteside to third, putting her in scoring position. Evans would hit into a double play but it would result in Whiteside scoring their only run of the game.
UMKC will wrap up play in Alabama on Sunday, Feb. 15 with a 9:00 a.m. game against Furman.
