Lincoln, Neb. -- The UMKC men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season when it fell 70-48 to Nebraska on Tuesday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Junior Jay Couisnard paced the 'Roos in the contest, as he finished with a team-high 11 points.
UMKC went toe-to-toe with the Huskers in the early portion of the game. Back-to-back long balls by Couisnard gave the 'Roos the 13-12 lead and the score was just 20-19 in NU's favor at the 6:51 mark.
Guard Sek Henry then drained two three-pointers in a span of 19 seconds to spark a 21-8 Cornhusker run to close out the half. Lance Jeter contributed to the spurt with a trey from the top of the key as time expired to send NU into the break with a 41-24 advantage.
Three-pointers kept UMKC in the game early in the half, as six shots found the bottom of the net over the first 13 minutes. The 'Roos, however, were too reliant on the long ball, as it made just two two-point field goals in the first 20 minutes.
Coming out of the half, Ryan Anderson connected on a three-pointer to stretch Nebraska's lead to 20 (44-24). The 'Roos continued fighting as it kept the margin around 20 points for much of the half.
With around five minutes to play, NU built its biggest lead at 28 (66-38) before freshman Fred Chatmon showed some promise with six straight as UMKC scored eight of the final 12 points.
The 'Roos shot .353 (18-51) from the field and .316 (6-19) from long range, while the Huskers finished with a .531 (26-49) field goal percentage and a .500 (6-12) mark from three-point land. NU also held the advantage on the boards, 33-30, and forced 14 UMKC turnovers.
The 'Roos (3-1) will return to action on Saturday night when they host Idaho State at 7:05 p.m. at the Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City.
