Indianapolis, Ind. -- The UMKC women's tennis team closed out its season with a pair of Summit League victories on Sunday at the Indianapolis Tennis Center. The Kangaroos opened the day with a tight 4-3 victory over IUPUI before it topped South Dakota State by the score of 4-0 later in the afternoon to complete the two-match sweep. It is the first time that the team has won back-to-back matches since winning three straight during the 2001-02 season.
Against the Jaguars, Dana Gardner and Allison Thompson opened the day by topping UMKC's Holly Davis and Megan Titus by the score of 8-3 at the No. 3 doubles position. IUPUI then clinched the point when Andrea Burkhardt and Emily Holsapple defeated Chelsea Horner and Emily Lindsay, 8-3, at the one line.
In singles, UMKC's Davis opened things up with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gardner at the five line. Lindsay and Horner then followed with victories at the top two spots in the line-up, as Lindsay topped Thompson, 6-2, 6-0, and Horner defeated Burkhardt at No. 2, 6-3, 7-5.
IUPUI evened the match at three all with straight set wins at three and four. Vanessa Carna defeated Akshara Reddy, 6-1, 6-1, at the three line, and Holsapple topped Burke, 6-2, 6-4.
The match came down to the No. 6 position where Nicole Kofron and Lisa Gebhard were stuck in a three-set marathon. The UMKC senior opened with an easy 6-0 win in the first set before Gebhard won the second, 7-5. The two players then battled for 75 minutes after the first five matches had been decided, and Kofron secured the win by the 7-5 margin.
In the second match of the day, Horner and Lindsay opened with a decisive 8-1 victory over SDSU's Kate and Emma Wylie. Davis and Titus then clinched the first point with an 8-3 win over Nellie Bloomberg and Caitlin Brannen at the No. 3 position. Burke and Reddy, meanwhile, were on the verge of picking up the win, as they led 7-3, but the match was stopped once the match was decided.
In singles, Davis picked up her second 6-0, 6-0 win of the day when she topped Emma Wylie at the five line. Lindsay followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the top position over Kate Wylie before Reddy clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Brannen.
UMKC also was ahead in the matches at the two, four and six positions but the matches were stopped when the team outcome was decided.
The Kangaroos end the season with a 3-12 overall record and a 3-5 mark in league play.
