DeKalb, Ill. -- The UMKC men's soccer team closed out action at the NIU-adidas/Baymont Inn Invitational taking on no. 10 Northwestern on Sunday. The Kangaroos held the Wildcat offense at bay for 30 minutes, but fell 3-0 on the afternoon.
Northwestern took the game to UMKC from the opening whistle, but the Kangaroos held, generating a couple of dangerous chances of their own in the middle of the first half.
In the 25th minute, Bryan Perez found himself open and unleashed a shot that forced Misha Rosenthal into a save for Northwestern. Chris Markey found himself in a similar position in the 27th minute, but his effort was blocked.
In the 33rd minute, Northwestern would find the back of the goal first. David Roth was on the end of a Matt Eliason pass, putting the shot out of the reach of Brandon Amaya into the top right corner of the net.
The game would go to half at the 1-0 scoreline, but Northwestern doubled its lead just after the intermission.
In the 49th minute, Drew Ratner put his head on a corner from Piero Bellizzi, nodding the ball to the upper left corner.
The Blue-and-Gold nearly halved the deficit twice before the hour mark, but efforts from Miguel Rodrigues in the 52nd minute and Brian Harris in the 59th were blocked by the Wildcat defense.
Bellizi would add a third for Northwestern in the 81st minute, with Tyler Voigt credited with the assist.
The Kangaroos were outshot 22-10 on the afternoon, with Amaya recording six saves in the loss. The foul count was even, with UMKC whistled for 15 infractions to 18 for the Wildcats.
UMKC (3-2-1) has a full week off before returning to action on September 23. The Kangaroos travel to Conway, Ark., to take on the University of Central Arkansas in a 12 p.m. match.
