Ft. Wayne, Ind. -- UMKC tipped off The Summit League portion of its schedule on Saturday, taking on newcomers IPFW. The Kangaroos pulled out to an early seven-point lead but couldn't hang on for the win, falling by a 62-51 margin.
IPFW jumped out to an early 7-5 lead, but six unanswered points from the post pushed UMKC to a 11-7 lead with 15:57 left in the half. Alysa Klein followed up on her second trey of the season with two of the six UMKC points, bookended by a pair of jumpers from Kalei Nance.
Both teams hit a cold spell over the next five minutes, with IPFW missing its next seven attempts and UMKC hitting only one of its six attempts - a trey by Taushelle Rushing - to give the Kangaroos a 14-7 lead. Each team turned the ball over four times during the span.
The Mastodons managed to pull within one, hitting three pointers with 10:54 and 8:11 left in the half, taking advantage of UMKC's continued struggles from the floor.
UMKC finally found its touch, pushing its lead back to five with just over seven minutes left in the half. Chazny Morris hit a layup and added a pair of free throws to give the Kangaroos an 18-13 cushion.
Unfortunately, IPFW closed out the half with a 15-7 run to take a 28-25 lead into the locker room.
IPFW stretched its lead to nine coming out of the break as UMKC turned the ball over three times and hit just one of its three opening efforts.
Sierra Radke keyed a five-point spurt for UMKC at the 16:09 mark, assisting on a Morris trey before hitting a layup of her own to pull the Kangaroos within four with 15:31 left in the game.
The Mastodons answered with a 14-2 run, hitting at a 6-of-10 clip from the floor to take a 50-34 lead with 9:58 left in the contest.
Rushing bookended a 9-0 run for UMKC, hitting a pair of layups and dishing assists to Klein and Morris. The Kangaroos trailed by a 56-47 scoreline with 1:10 left in the game, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling by a 62-51 scoreline.
UMKC hit at a 31.7 percent (19-60) rate from the floor to IPFW's 38.2 percent (21-55) mark, with both teams hitting five three-pointers. The Kangaroos outshot the Mastodons from the line, hitting at an 88.9 percent rate to a 65.2 percent clip for the hosts, but IPFW had 15 makes on 23 attempts to just eight makes in nine chances for UMKC.
Morris finished the game with 15 points and seven rebounds, with Klein chipping in 13 points. The Kangaroos held even on the glass with IPFW, but turned the ball over 23 times to 20 for the Mastodons.
Johnna Lewis-Carlisle finished with 16 points to lead all scorers, but the IPFW bench - led by Juliane Hohne's 10 - scored 26 points to just two for UMKC. Tina Moen grabbed a game-high nine boards.
