
Johnson's 22 Kills Not Enough; Kangaroos Fall In Four At IUPUI To Close Out The 2007 Season

Indianapolis, Ind. - The UMKC volleyball team closed out the 2007 season with a four-game defeat at IUPUI on Saturday night at the IUPUI Gymnasium in Indianapolis. The Kangaroos got a career-high 22 kills from senior Sarah Johnson in her final match in Blue and Gold, but it wasn't enough as the team dropped the contest by the scores of 17-30, 30-24, 18-30, 20-30. With the loss, UMKC finishes the year with a 5-27 overall record and a 2-14 mark in Summit League play.
The Jaguars got off to a quick start in the first game, as they doubled up the Kangaroos, 14-7, through 21 points. IUPUI then extended its advantage to 10 points at 20-10 before going on to the easy 30-17 victory. The Jaguars finished with 15 kills to zero errors and a match-high .429 hitting percentage in the game.
UMKC responded with a quick start of its own in game two, as the squad jumped out to a 10-5 lead behind kills from Caitlin Koenig, Sarah Johnson, Jamie Hagerman and Holly Schmidt. The Kangaroos then continued to apply the pressure, as they pushed their advantage to 10 points at 16-6. UMKC wouldn't allow the Jaguars to get any closer than five points in the game, as it evened the match at 1-1 with the 30-24 win. The Kangaroos finished with 21 kills and a .300 hitting clip in the victory.
After the intermission, the two teams went back-and-forth to start the third game, as the score was nine all through the first 18 points. The Jaguars then put together an extended run by scoring 10 straight points to go up 19-9 to take control of the action. UMKC continued battling as it got to within seven points at 25-18, but the deficit was too large to overcome, as IUPUI took the game, 30-18.
The Kangaroos got off to a solid start in the fourth game, as they took a 7-5 lead behind kills by Lauren Starks, Johnson and Hagerman. With the score 12 all, IUPUI scored six of eight points to go up 18-14 before it stretched its advantage to 10 at 26-16. The Jaguars then went on to claim the game by the 30-20 scoreline.
UMKC finished with 60 kills and a .202 hitting percentage on the night, while IUPUI had 73 kills and a .305 clip. The Kangaroos also had 58 assists, 85 digs and six blocks in the match.
Three UMKC players finished in double digits in kills with Johnson's 22 leading all players in the match. Hagerman was second on the squad with 11 on the night, while Schmidt added 10 for the team. Koenig, meanwhile, posted her fourth double-double of the season with 55 assists and 11 digs on the night. The 55 assists tied a career-high for the Kangaroo sophomore. Defensively, Mandy Tipton finished with a team-high 32 digs in the competition. It is the second straight match that the junior has topped the 30-dig plateau.
UMKC finishes the season with a 5-27 overall record and a 2-14 mark in Summit League play.
