Heather Wimberly is in her second year as a graduate assistant with the UMKC women’s basketball program. Wimberly joins the coaching ranks after playing the past five years for the ‘Roos as a student-athlete.
As a senior, Wimberly appeared in 16 games, where she averaged 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds in 20.4 minutes per contest. The guard also was third on the squad with 51 assists, which included a career-high nine assists in win over Northern Colorado on Dec. 13.
During her career in KC, Wimberly played through several knee injuries, as she saw action in 81 games with a total of 34 starts. The Tulsa, Okla., native’s top career performance came on Nov. 16, 2006, when she scored a career-high 17 points at Kansas when she made 7-of-9 attempts from the free throw stripe.
Following the 2008-09 season, Wimberly was the recipient of UMKC’s David B. Milner Award, which is given annually to a student-athlete, who through persistence and determination has been an inspiration to others. Wimberly also excelled in the classroom as a student-athlete, as she was a two time Winter/Spring Academic all-League and two-time Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence honoree.
Wimberly played prep ball at Booker T. Washington High School, where she was a McDonald’s all-America nominee as a senior. She also earned Oklahoma Coaches Association all-State honors and an all-conference selection following her senior season.
Wimberly earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from UMKC in December 2009. She is currently seeking a master’s degree from UMKC in education.
