Doug Hall is entering his fourth season at UMKC, and his first as an assistant coach, serving as the Director of Basketball Operations the first three years. Hall joined the Kangaroos in June 2009 after serving as the head basketball coach at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan., from 2001-09.
Hall came to Kansas City as the third winningest coach in Southwestern College history, compiling a 145-92 overall record. The 145 wins are the most during any eight-year span in the 103-year history of Southwestern College basketball.
During his career with the Moundbuilders, Hall guided his team to three of the top-four win totals in school history, which included a school record 28 victories in 2006. During that season, Hall led Southwestern to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles and to a berth in the NAIA National Tournament. Those accomplishments led to him being named the 2006 KCAC Coach of the Year.
Hall’s teams posted three consecutive 20-win seasons (2005-07), and reached as high as fifth in the NAIA national rankings during the 2006 campaign. He also guided Southwestern to seven consecutive winning seasons from 2003-09, which was the longest streak for the school since 1947.
Hall recruited and coached a total of five All-Americans and 10 Academic all-Americans during his tenure in Winfield. He also coached the 2005 and 2006 KCAC Conference Player of the Year, and he had three student-athletes earn the KCAC Newcomer of the Year honor. In the classroom, Hall left Southwestern with a perfect 100 percent graduation rate, as all 33 of his seniors went on to earn their degrees.
Hall took over as the head coach at Southwestern at the age of 29 in 2001 following a five-year stint as an assistant coach at the school. During his second season (1997-98), Hall helped the Moundbuilders to the KCAC Tournament title and NAIA National Tournament appearance, which led to his promotion to the associate head coach.
While at Southwestern, Hall also served as an associate professor of sport management from 2001-09. Additionally, he worked in the development office, where he left the school as an Assistant Athletics Director.
Hall played collegiate basketball at Division III Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where he was a two-year starter on teams that combined to go 56-23 and win two Iowa Conference titles. Both teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament, with the 1991-92 squad reaching the Sweet 16.
The Guttenberg, Iowa, native earned his bachelor of arts degree in fitness management with a minor in business from Wartburg College in 1993. He then went on to earn his master’s degree in sport management from West Virginia University in 1994.
He and his wife, Tiffany, have two children - Darren and Katie.
