Kansas City Women’s Basketball Hosts Denver on Wednesday
1/14/2025 2:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The Roos and Pios tip off at 7 p.m.
THE STARTERS
- The Roos will look to make a return to the win column in conference play. Kansas City began the conference season with its first conference-opening win under Coach Jackson-Durrett at St. Thomas. A win over Denver would give KC its first home win of the conference season and first win in the Swinney Center since Dec. 29, when the Roos defeated Westminster 103-49.
- Alayna Contreras put up her eleventh consecutive double-digit performance in the loss to South Dakota State. She scored 24 points, marking her fourth 20-point performance of the season. She ranks fifth in scoring in the Summit during conference play averaging 19.3 per game.
- A win over Denver in the Swinney Center would be Kansas City's first since Jan. 27, 2022. The Pios defeated KC both home and away in the 2022-23 and the 2023-24 seasons. KC's most recent win over Denver came March 3, 2023, in Sioux Falls, S.D. on a buzzer-beater from Sanaa' St. Andre to send the Roos to the Summit League Quarterfinals.
- Freshman Alyssa Febres played 22 minutes at South Dakota State, just three minutes shy of her career-high 25 minutes which she earned against Westminster on Dec. 29. Febres earned her 20th assist of the season at SDSU.
- Emani Bennett, Alayna Contreras and Tamia Ugass have been key players for KC in conference play. The trio have reached double-digits in all three of Kansas City's conference games and have combined for 158 points in the past three games.
SCOUTING DENVER
- Denver enters the game looking to pick up its first win of conference play. The pioneers entered league play with seven wins under their belt including back-to-back wins against Western Colorado (64-58) and North Alabama (78-70) to close non-conference play.
- Jordan Jones is just one of four players in the Summit League averaging more than 20 points per game during conference play. She currently ranks third in the league with 23.3 points per game and enters the match coming off a career-high of 30 points against North Dakota.
- Of Denver's four conference games this season, three have been decided by ten or fewer points. The Pioneers fell to South Dakota in their conference opener by six points, 71-77.
- The Roos have a chance to snap Denver's two-game winning streak in the series that began last season. Kansas City has the upper hand when playing the Pios in the Swinney Center with a 5-4 record.
