KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Women's Soccer's season came to a close at Durwood Soccer Stadium this afternoon, as the Roos fell to the Summit League Champion, Denver, 2-0. Mackenzie Caldwell's solid play in goal kept Kansas City in the match, finishing with six saves on 14 shots faced.
KEY MOMENTS
- 4' / 0-0 | Denver applied pressure early, making a run up the right side of the field. A chip was sent to the back post for a header, but Caldwell stuck the shot with her right arm to keep the Pios out of goal.
- 28' / 0-0 | The Pioneers had an opportunity in the middle of the field, taking a shot from the top of the box. The chance rolled right into Caldwell's awaiting arms for a smothering save.
- 32' / 0-0 | Caijah Anderson stepped in and made a strong tackle on a Denver attack, sparking a counterattack for the Roos. Gabrielle Simms made a run up the field with the ball and attempted to earn a corner, but was unsuccessful.
- 38' / 0-1 | A corner kick for Denver was initially cleared away by Kansas City, but the Pioneers maintained possession and a low cross was buried near the back post for a goal.
- 39' / 0-1 | Kansas City wanted to respond to the Denver goal quickly as Simms drew a foul right outside of the box. Sophia Limongi stepped up for the free kick, sending a shot towards the top of the goal, leaving DU's keeper no choice but to punch the ball out of play. Anderson sent a skying cross in on the ensuing corner, but it was too high for any Roo to connect with.
- 47' / 0-2 | The Pioneers struck quickly in the second half, as a shot glanced off the outstretched fingertips of Caldwell and snuck into the back of the net.
- 53' / 0-2 | A chance was earned for the Roos as Madison Page and Anna Jennings teamed up for a run into the Denver attacking zone. Page teed up for a shot from the left side of the box, forcing DU's Nerea Arrazola to make a diving save.
- 68' / 0-2 | Denver looked to extend the lead even further on a strike from 25-yards out, but Caldwell was there for the save, reaching above her head and knocking the ball down safely.
- 82' / 0-2 | The Roos earned a pair of corner kicks and created opportunities out of them, the first was a blocked shot by Ririka Kamimura, the second a header by Page that was wide right of the goal.
