NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Kansas City Women's Tennis opened up the spring season at Burns Park this weekend, falling in a pair of matches to Arkansas and Central Arkansas.
The season began on Saturday with a loss at the hands of Arkansas, 5-0. The Razorbacks won at No. 1 and 2 doubles to take the doubles point, and then handily won four singles matches to take the victory.
"We played a really good team and had some bright spots with Joanna (Cardona) and Tuana (Tinaztepe)," Head Coach Kendell Hale said. "We need more matches to get our timing and strokes to where we need them. The team competed hard but were just outplayed."
On Sunday afternoon, the Roos took Central Arkansas to the wire, falling by a 4-3 decision. Michela Xibilia and Laura Munoz-Baroja won their match at No. 1 doubles, but the Bears took No. 2 and 3 to earn the first point. In singles, the Roos fought back with straight set wins by Cardona and Tinaztepe and a three-set victory by Xibilia.
The match came down to the No. 5 singles court and Anastassiya Timofeyeva, who split the first two sets but ultimately fell in a third-set super tiebreaker.
"This match was closer than the Chiefs game, but we came out on the short end," Hale said. "Everyone fought to the last point, I'm super proud of how they competed today against a strong team. It came down to Nastia's match, where we were just two points short."
The Roos will have a short break before resuming play on Feb. 5 in State University, Ark. as they take on Arkansas State.
