GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Kansas City Volleyball (8-1, 8-1) wasted little time disposing of North Dakota (2-7, 2-5) this afternoon, sweeping the Fighting Hawks 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-20). It is the Roos' second sweep of the season, and the first since Feb. 1.
"Overall it was a pretty complete match and a good team win," Head Coach Christi Posey said.
The Roos jumped on UND from the beginning, using three service aces and a 7-1 run to gain a 15-8 lead in the first set. Kansas City sent across five aces in the set, led by Maddie Renn with two. Renn also finished the day with a match-high 15 digs.
Kansas City was efficient in the attack all day, finishing with a .314 hitting percentage on the match. The Roos were at their best in the second set, logging a blazing .406 hitting percentage with 16 kills on 32 attacks. Melanie Brecka finished with 12 kills to lead the squad, followed by Alex Ratzlaff with 10. They both had over 10 digs as well, finishing with double-doubles in the win.
Alli Schomers facilitated the offense with ease, picking the right passes at the right time to finish with 37 assists and a .446 setting percentage. She also picked her attacks at the right time, sneaking over two kills in the third set and finishing with three on the day.
"Alli directed our offense with a well balanced attack, much of that due to our primary passers: Alex, Maddie and Kennedy (Schritenthal)," Posey said.
The Roos were dominant at the net, blocking away six UND attacks while only being blocked four times. Ashia Dorsey and Odyssey Warren each finished with 1.5 blocks to lead the team.
With the win, Kansas City improves to 8-1, the Roos' best start to a season in program history. The previous best start through nine matches came in 2002, when the Roos began the year 7-2. Kansas City takes on the Fighting Hawks again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
