ROOS’ SCHEDULE STACKED WITH 19 GAMES AGAINST 2021 NCAA TOUNRNAMENT TEAMS
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Softball has officially announced its schedule for the 2022 season. The Roos, led by third-year Head Coach Kerry Shaw, will play a 56-game regular season with 19 contests against teams who appeared in the 2021 NCAA tournament. The tough slate is highlighted by a contest hosting the defending National Champion Oklahoma Sooners, in Kansas City at the Urban Youth Academy on April 28.
Kansas City finished their 2021 campaign with a 29-26 record, their first winning season in a decade. They also defeated their first ranked opponent in program history when they shocked No. 6 Oklahoma State 6-5 in Stillwater on March 19.
This season is presumed to have the most Power Five opponents and highest RPI (13 games scheduled against teams ranked or receiving votes in the final 2021 poll) for Kansas City Softball in program history. Last season marked the Roos' greatest strength of schedule in the history of the program. They faced six opponents who were receiving national attention in the NFCA Coaches Poll and seven opponents that landed at 2021 NCAA Regional sites, including two teams that reached the ultimate pinnacle of making it to the Women's College World Series.
KC will open its 2022 season on the beach in Tampa, Fla. with stout competition in the University of South Florida Invitational. On opening day, the Roos will face the reigning Big Ten Champions, No. 19 Michigan, followed by USF, a 2021 NCAA tournament team. On deck for day two is SEC powerhouse, No. 9 Florida, and rounding out the field is a matchup with Illinois State, the 2021 MVC Regular Season Champions.
The Roos will travel to five other top-ranked tournaments around the country, including stops in Las Vegas, Arkansas, Arizona, and Oklahoma. Featured matchups of those tournaments include games against top-25 teams from the final rankings of the 2021 season: No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 11 Arkansas, No. 21 Arizona State, No. 24 Wichita State. Kansas City will also face a Kennesaw State team who made an NCAA appearance last season and won the Big South Conference, as well as the BYU Cougars who have made NCAA Regional appearances for 15-years running.
Kansas City's home opener is scheduled for March 15, featuring a round-robin with SEMO and Iowa. The Roos will open Summit League play at the Urban Youth Academy, hosting North Dakota for a three-game series March 26 & 27.
KC will step up to the plate against a few local foes in mid-week matchups. They will look to knock off No. 13 Missouri in Columbia on April 5, and Kansas in Lawrence on April 12. The Roos will then welcome No. 1 Oklahoma to Kansas City for a single game on April 28 at 6 p.m. Kansas City last faced the Sooners on March 12, 2021 where the Roos held a 2-0 lead until the fifth inning. Delainey Fengolio blasted a two-run homerun to give KC the edge until a rain delay turned the momentum in the 2-6 final decision.
All home games will be played at the Urban Youth Academy. Stay tuned @KCROOSSB on social media and visit KCROOS.COM for the full schedule and ticketing information.
