Volleyball's Season Comes to a Close in Summit Quarterfinals

Melanie Brecka led the Roos with 17 kills, but it was not enough to push past ORU
VERMILLION, S.D. - Kansas City Volleyball's postseason came to a premature close this evening, as the Roos fell to Oral Roberts in the Summit League semifinals, 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-14). Melanie Brecka led the Roos, finishing her senior season with a 17-kill, 13-dig double-double.
KEY MOMENTS
- S1 / 4-0 | A Kennedy Schritenthal ace capped off a four-point run by Kansas City to begin the match.
- S1 / 11-6 | Back-to-back kills by Bree Thompson put the Roos ahead by five midway through the set.
- S1 / 24-16 | An ace by Brecka finished off seven-straight points by the Roos and put them in a position to take the first set handily.
- S2 / 3-4 | After the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead, a kill by Brecka pulled KC within a point.
- S2 / 10-13 | Another kill by Brecka brought the Roos within three, but ORU responded with a seven-point run to take command of the set.
- S3 / 7-8 | A solo block by Carly Gillen brought Kansas City within a point early in the third set, but the Golden Eagles won the next six points to control the set.
- S3 / 18-23 | Alli Schomers sent across an ace to cap a four-point Kansas City run, but it was too little, too late for the Roos.
- S4 / 6-6 | The two teams traded the first 12 points of the fourth set, finished by a kill from De'Janae Arnold. However, ORU would then go on a 5-1 run to jump in front.
- S4 / 14-22 | Arnold came in for another kill, the final Kansas City point of the match.
STATS TO NOTE
- Brecka finished with a match-high 17 kills, the only Roo in double-digits. Arnold was the next-closest, finishing with nine.
- Brecka and Maddie Renn finished with match-highs of 13 digs. Alli Schomers had 10 as well.
- After hitting at a .258 clip in the first set, the Roos were held to .055 hitting in the final three sets.
- Kansas City finished with eight blocks on the day. Arnold was involved in five, with one solo and four block assists.
SEASON RECAP
The Roos finish the season 21-10, matching the 2018 Roos' win total. With four First Team All-Summit League players, this squad brought home the most individual accolades in program history. Of the 14 players on roster, 13 will be eligible to return for the 2022 season.
