KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Athletics earned a cumulative 985 in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR), announced Tuesday by the NCAA offices. The score marks the second-consecutive year the department posted a 985, which ties for the best in the history of the athletics department. The previous high of 982 was set during the 2016-17 academic year.
The APR is the annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The multi-year average is a four-year rate of student-athletes in school between the 2015-16 and 2018-19 academic years.
The 985 department average ranks third in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and is two points higher than the NCAA national average (983).
The Roo women's tennis program scored a perfect 1000 average for the second-consecutive year, which ranks in the top 10 percent nationally. The team received an NCAA Public Recognition Award.
"Our student-athletes continue to serve as a model of excellence in the classroom," said Director of Athletics Dr. Brandon Martin. "Academic success is a hallmark and pride point for our athletics department and we plan to continue to be at the vanguard of this realm of achievement nationally. Kudos to our coaches and academic services staff for playing critical roles in this success."
The women's tennis and men's soccer programs highlight the success as they each tied for a No. 1 ranking in the WAC with multi-year averages of 1000 and 986, respectively. Also, women's basketball (995) was second in the conference, and was above the NCAA national average for the sport at 983.
The APR, created to provide a real-time measurement of academic success than graduation rates offer, is a team-based metric where scholarship student-athletes earn one point each term for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. Schools that don't offer scholarships track their recruited student-athletes.
