Softball Drops Two on Day Two of Rock Chalk Challenge
3/7/2020 7:07:00 PM | Softball
Kansas City softball wrapped up day two of the Rock Chalk Challenge in Lawrence, Kan, falling in both games to Wichita State and Kansas. The Roos will have one more chance to come out on top, in a rematch from day one tomorrow against Drake. Chyanne Onstad played well for the Roos today, going 2-4 in the box with a walk, a double and an RBI. She leads the team in hits (17) and slugging percentage (.604).Â
Â
Kansas City and Wichita State matched up for the second time in the tournament today. The Shockers explosive offense was too much for the Roos, as the Shockers won 9-1.
Â
Coming into the Rock Chalk Challenge, the Shockers were ranked top-30 in the nation in several hitting statistics, including: batting average (.326), doubles (37), scoring (6.52), on-base percentage (.410), and slugging percentage (.519). Their offensive power carried into this game as well, scoring nine runs en-route to the win.
Â
The Roos had trouble making solid contact with the Shocker's pitcher Lange, who finished with a complete game only allowing three hits. Those hits came from the Roos top of the lineup, in Katherine Karnatz, Chyanne Onstad, and Delainey Fenoglio.
Â
The Roos were first to the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Sydney Garcia reached on an error and Onstad made them pay for it, lacing a double down the right-field line for an RBI.
Â
From there on, the Shockers took control of the game, as they scored five in the bottom of the first, one run in the fourth and ended the game by run-rule with three runs in the fifth inning.
Â
Mia Hoveland, the starter for the Roos, moves to 1-4 on the season and the Roos as a team move to 4-12.
Â
Â
For the first time in the tournament, the Roos matched up with the hosts, Kansas. One big inning for the Jayhawks decided this one, as the Roos fought to stay with the Jayhawks through the first four innings. Because of the big fifth inning, the Jayhawks came away with a 12-4 run-rule win.
Â
Kansas got off to a hot start to the game, as they scored four runs in the first three inning. The third inning, Roos pitcher Kailyn Packard had two outs needing one out to get out of trouble. Because of an error in foul territory, Kansas's Rodriguez got another shot at the plate. She took advantage of the error and sent a three-run homer to give the Jayhawks a 4-0 lead.
Â
The bats for the Roos came alive in the fourth inning, as they totaled two hits and a walk en route to three runs to pull the game to within a run 4-3. First, faith Willis came through in the clutch with two outs and drove a two run RBI hit into center field. Ashley Thorne then delivered with an RBI single that scored Willis.
Â
However, the big inning for Kansas came in the fifth, scoring six runs. The long-ball hurt the Roos in the inning, as Kansas found the other side of the wall twice for five runs.
Â
Kailyn Packard picked up the loss for the Roos, as the team moves to 0-4 in the Rock Chalk Challenge and 4-13 on the season.
