DES MOINES, Iowa - A depleted lineup shot Kansas City's chances today against Drake, as they fell 7-0. The Roos missed Michela Xibilia in the one spot, who retired the match due to injury.
"I knew at the beginning of the season that being healthy would be key," Head Coach Kendell Hale said. "This was the case today."
The Roos switched up the doubles lineup with the injury to Xibilia, pairing Yana Grechkina and Riddhi Sharma together in the first flight. Rhiannon McBlane and Grace Ball stayed paired together, but moved up to the two spot. Grechkina and Sharma fought tough against a Drake opponent that was riding a five-match win streak, but fell in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5).
The order of the singles lineup remained the same, but each Roo played one spot higher than their normal placement. At number one, Yana Grechkina took a break early in both sets, but faltered down the stretch, falling 7-5, 6-4. Grace Ball moved up to the four spot, forcing a tiebreak in the first set before falling, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
The Roos will have another full weekend next week, traveling to Springfield, Mo., for matches against Southeast Missouri State on Saturday and Missouri State on Sunday.
