Grechkina, Sharma and Ball Each Pick up Singles Victories
DES MOINES, Iowa - In heartbreaking fashion, Kansas City Women's Tennis fell to North Dakota today, 4-3. The match came down to the final point, with the Fighting Hawks clinching with a third set tiebreaker at four singles.
"This is a tough loss. The match came down to key individual points and they didn't go our way," Head Coach Kendell Hale said. "The girls fought in singles only for it to come to a tiebreaker, which came up short."
North Dakota took the point in doubles by the skin of its teeth. The teams split at the one and two spots, with Thanushree Vale and Riddhi Sharma winning the second flight, 7-6 (5). Grace Ball and Rhiannon McBlane forced a tiebreak in the three spot, but fell just short, 7-6 (5).
"We lost a tough one at three doubles to get us the doubles point and I knew it would come back to haunt us," Hale said.
The Roos took three points back in singles quickly, thanks to the efforts of Yana Grechkina at the two spot, Sharma at three and Ball at five. Each of the other three singles matches went to a full three sets, and all went North Dakota's way.Â
The final point came down to the fourth court, where Vale was in a competitive match with the Fighting Hawks' Andrea Jansson. The third set went to a tiebreak that went beyond regulation, with Jansson pulling out the 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8) victory.
Kansas City will take on Drake tomorrow at 11 AM.
