Kansas City Softball is around the corner and the 2020 schedule has been released. The new- look Roos will be led by first-year Head Coach Kerry Shaw, who comes to Kansas City from the University of Texas where he served as an assistant coach. For the entire 2020 schedule, click HERE.Â
Â
"The 2020 team is looking forward to the challenge of becoming the first Roo softball team in history to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament," said Coach Shaw. "This will be a very difficult challenge with a schedule loaded with tough teams, but we all believe we have the ability to reach this historical goal."
Â
There are several highlights to the 2020 schedule. The Roos, who play all home games at the state-of-the-art Urban Youth Academy, will have a total of 13 home games this season.
Â
Play for the Roos this season begins on February 14 when they head to Arlington, Texas for the Maverick Classic hosted by UT-Arlington. There, they will face Kent State in the first game of the season, followed by SF Austin, Texas Southern, and UT-Arlington. The Roos are seeking another fast start to their season. In 2019, they sprinted out to an 8-2 overall record, making it the best start in school history.
From there, Kansas City heads to the Aloha State for the Hawaii Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii February 21-23.
There are several highly competitive local teams that the Roos will play in 2020. One of these matchups is with the cross-state Mizzou Tigers on March 4. The Roos will also tangle with the Kansas Jayhawks multiple times, first on March 7 at the Rock Chalk Challenge and then on March 14/15 at the Jayhawk Invitational.Â
Western Athletic Conference play begins March 20 at Grand Canyon and concludes May 2 vs. CSU Bakersfield. Last season, Kansas City went 6-12 in conference play, going into the conference tournament as the fifth seed. The Roos used a late seventh inning offensive explosion to defeat the fourth-place Utah Valley Wolverines. The Roos then fell to top-seed Seattle U by one run in the semifinals.
