KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- One pillar of UMKC Athletics' Student-Athlete Development Office is to provide engaging and impactful programming to help student-athletes prepare for life after college and outside of sport. Throughout the month of February, the Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) has partnered with UMKC Career Services to facilitate a “Roo Resume Workshop” series for all junior and senior student-athletes.
During each workshop, student-athletes learned multiple skills from resume basics to advanced resume review. Tess Surprenant, Interim Director of Career Services, facilitated the workshops along with Mike Selck, Manager of Employer Development and Engagement, and Daniel Folk, Career Counselor. Selck notes that “student-athletes represent some of the hardest workers on campus. Pairing athletics with the career and professional development office allows us to find a career fit that is as fulfilling to them as the sport they excel at.”
Erin Roth, a junior on Women's Soccer, found the workshop to be helpful as she is completing an internship this semester with Sporting KC. Roth said that, “I really enjoyed being at the resume workshop. I haven't done much with my resume so attending this program helped me realize how important it is to work on your resume and complete it while still in school.”
Xavier Bishop, a junior on Men's Basketball, said that “the resume workshop was very helpful. It made me realize how quick the real world approaching, and I am preparing for the next step.”
Ryan Tome, a senior on Men's Soccer, is applying to Law School and found the resume workshop to be helpful. He said that, “the workshop was fantastic. The instructors were extremely hands-on, helpful, and supportive in helping us craft our professional resumes. It was great to see my fellow student-athletes so involved throughout the whole presentation. Events and workshops like these are why UMKC student-athletes find so much success in their post-graduate careers.”
“We were excited to partner with Career Services on this project,” said Amelia Howard, Assistant Director of Academic Support. “This series of workshops provided our upperclassmen with the opportunity to either start a resume or improve on an existing one. The goal of our programming is to help the student-athletes learn these career preparation tools in advance of graduation so that they are best prepared to enter the next phase of their lives after UMKC.”
Another key feature of the Student-Athlete Development programming will be UMKC Athletics' Ladies Networking Night in April. Both initiatives are part of a larger mission to provide student-athletes with the tools to meet with professional and personal goals, and holistically prepare for life after college.
