
UMKC Advances to WAC Championship with Win over Redhawks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women's tennis team (14-9) advanced to the championship match of the WAC Tournament with a 4-2 win over Seattle (9-14) on Saturday afternoon at the Mesa Tennis Center in Mesa, Ariz.
The Roos fell behind 1-0 early in the match when Seattle claimed the doubles point.
From the top line, Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina fell to Michelle Lui and Kelli Woodman, 6-3, and at No. 2, Aliona Ladutska and Grace Ball lost to Hannah Gianan and Kyra Jung, 6-3.
Katie Fries and Thanushree Vale, meanwhile, were leading 5-4 when the match was clinched.
In singles play, the Redhawks pushed the lead to 2-0 when Jung knocked-off Johnson, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
That would be the final point for the Redhawks, however, as Fries beat Gianan, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Vale took down Kali McCollister, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 to even the match at 2-2.
The Roos then took the lead when Ladutska beat Lui at No. 1, 7-5, 6-1 and Grechkina clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Woodman.
In the remaining match, Ball was leading Lily-Ana Kreutzer, 6-3, 5-4 when the match was clinched.
The Blue & Gold will face UT Rio Grande Valley tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT with a berth in the NCAA Tournament on the line.
