
UMKC Takes Down Instate Foe Northwest Missouri State

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women's tennis team (6-8) picked up a 6-1 home win on Friday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center over Northwest Missouri State (1-5).
The Roos opened the match by sweeping the doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina teamed at No. 1 to take down Luiza Souza and Sara Grozdanovic, 6-3, while at No. 2, Aliona Ladutska and Grace Ball beat Tania Teruel and Irene Recuenco, 6-4. At No. 3, Katie Fries and Ioanna Lathouri took down Tess Lovig and Marta Ferrando, 6-2.
Johnson quickly made it 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Souza, while Thanushree Vale pushed it to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lovig at No. 5. Ladutska then clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Teruel at No. 1.
The Roos fifth point came from a 6-2, 6-3 win by Fries at No. 2 over Recuenco, while Ball won 1-6, 7-5, 10-8 over Grozdanovic. In the final match, Grechkina fell in a close 7-5, 7-5 match at No. 4 despite battling injuries.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they head to Springfield, Mo., to take on Missouri State at 2 p.m. CT.
