
Roos Fall to Lopes in WAC Play

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (7-15, 3-6) dropped its Western Athletic Conference match to Grand Canyon (7-14, 2-7) on Saturday afternoon at the GCU Arena in Phoenix, Ariz.
Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) led the Roos in the match, posting a double-double with 13 assists, 10 digs and two kills, while Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) added a team-high 15 digs and four assists in the back row.
In the opening set, the Roos hung close early, trailing by just two at 12-10 after a kill from Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) and cut the lead to one at 17-16 on a kill from Alexia Morey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and a GCU error. UMKC, though, could get no closer as Grand Canyon won the set 25-18.
In the second set, the Roos jumped out to a 10-8 lead after back-to-back kills from Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) and another from Ratzlaff, but a 7-0 run gave the Lopes a 15-10 edge. The Roos closed the gap back down to two at 19-17, but GCU scored six of the final eight points to go up 2-0 in the match with a 25-19 win.
Coming out of the break, the Lopes would close out the match with a 25-21 third set victory. The Roos trailed by just one early at 7-6, but GCU stretched its lead to 11-6 after scoring four straight. UMKC once again battled back to within three twice, including lastly at 24-21, but the final point of the match went to the Lopes.
For the Roos, Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) led the team with eight kills, 12 digs, an ace and a block, while Ratzlaff matched her in kills, adding six digs in the effort. Sadler finished with five kills and three blocks and Morey notched six kills and a block. Kynnedy Myers (Rose Hill, Kan.) chipped in 13 assists and six digs.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they welcome in New Mexico State to the Swinney Recreation Center on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. for their penultimate home match of the season.
