KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC women's basketball picked up its fifth win of the season, defeating UMSL 60-45 on Wednesday night at Swinney Recreations Center. Junior guard Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.) scored a team-high 13 points in the win, and senior guard Ceidra Coleman (Bryan, Texas) chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.
UMKC (5-3) struggled offensively in the first half, tallying just eight points in the first quarter on 2-for-14 shooting, but held UMSL (4-3) to 26.7 percent shooting (4-for-15) to trail by just two at the end of the opening quarter.
The Roos outscored the Tritons 15-6 in the second quarter to hold a seven-point advantage at the half, shooting an improved but still shaky 6-of-17 in the second 10 minutes of the game. Graduate transfer Lyndsay Leikem (Tucson, Ariz.) tabbed four points in the second quarter, knocking down a three and grabbing two boards to help give UMKC the halftime lead.
“I think this was a great game to learn from,” head coach Marsha Frese said. “When we don't shoot the ball as well as we would like, we have to quickly change the mindset and start executing. We have been shooting the ball extremely well lately, so I think we were just a little surprised when the shots weren't falling, and it took us longer than I would have hoped to get on track and executing better. I think we saw the result of that execution in the second half.”
UMKC used much improved shooting in the second half to pull away from the Tritons, knocking down 53.8 percent of its shots in the final 20 minutes. Waldron scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter, knocking down three shots on five attempts including one from long-range, and taking advantage of a trip to the charity stripe by knocking down both free throw attempts in the quarter. The Roos outpaced UMSL 37-29 in the second half to go on to the 60-45 victory.
The Roos are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 10, when they take on Omaha at Municipal Auditorium for “Kansas City Day” where UMKC will don special Kansas City themed jerseys designed by Charlie Hustle Shop. Tipoff against the Mavs is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
